We're up to 4 eggs now in the Bluebird box!

Wednesday, 29 April 2009 @ 5.25 PM

The Pileated was back again today - that's twice in one day. This time, at about 5.15 PM. He landed on the Bluebird house (pissing off the male Bluebird big time!), then flew back to the oak trees, and then made his way back to the log feeders. This time though, he opted for the Not-log feeder.

Must get photo of Pileated Woodpecker on Bluebird house. Must!

Over the past 20 minutes, the male Bluebird has repeatedly chased off both a Downy and Hairy Woodpecker who have been trying to eat off the log feeders. They've showed zero interest in the Bluebird nest box, yet the male is determined on keeping away any bird he sees as a threat.

I wish he would be as diligent in dealing with the Red-Winged Blackbirds, Grackles, Starlings, and House Sparrows!

This proves that this year has a different Bluebird pair nesting in the box. Not only are they more territorial that the pair last year, but they still don't like to stick around when I go into the yard.

There's now a third Bluebird egg in the nest box! Keep on going mama Bluebird! 5 or 6 would be awesome!

The Pileated Woodpecker returned again this morning at about 9.30 am. He stayed for a few minutes and ate the bark butter from the log feeder. While he was eating, the male Bluebird started attacking him, which was both funny and annoying to watch. The Piliated pretty much ignored him, and after a few swoops, the Bluebird thankfully gave up.

The Red-Bellied Woodpecker also stopped by for a visit while the Pileated was at the visit, but he wisely kept away from the Woodpecker feeders. Now that would have been an awesome photograph though - both Woodpeckers on the same feeder at the same time!

It seems as if a neighborhood squirrel has discovered the Flicker's nest in the oak tree. Now, it could have been that the squirrel lived there first, or perhaps not, but as of right now, the squirrel is in the nest, and the Flickers are pissed. Actually, pissed is an understatement. The squirrel keeps trying to chase off the woodpeckers, and in turn, the woodpeckers keep trying to attack the squirrel.

It's currently unclear how this confrontation will turn out. I hope the Flickers win this battle, but I suppose we'll have to wait until tomorrow to find out (since I can't actively watch them at the moment).

The Pileated Woodpecker came to the log feeder again this morning at approximately 10.30 and stayed for close to 5 minutes. Hopefully this will develop into a daily event. He loves eating the bark butter!

As hoped for, mama Bluebird laid her second egg in the nest box this morning!

It seems though as if she is not spending a lot of time in the box though. Hopefully this will change. I don't want to have to parent her babies because she's too dumb to do it herself!
